Allowing access to the limited collection, PMG gave away 50 palettes personally to the first 50 fans to lineup around the block. Teaming up with imaginethat’s Founder & Creative Director, Lynette Nylander, who dreamed up the idea and execution of this experience – See Me worked as a third-party production. Together, we developed the branded graphic design and logo treatment to further brand the episodic work. In collaboration with the Botopasi locals, Alies Giordano Josafath and Nokomo Ritfeld, I developed stylized portraits, showcasing the intersection of tradition meets city-influenced modernity. The concept of image-making inherently attracted the village’s younger generation as an opportunity to depict their own fantasies and truths – approached from a gaze both sensitive and sensual. The sets were designed incorporating common Saamakan household materials; patterned linoleum floors, pangi cloths, carved wooden seats, and trimmed palm fronds or blooms from the abundant jungle surroundings. ‘Saamaka, Mii’ (Saramacca, Children) is a series of photographs representing the contemporary Afro-Surinamese youth culture. Portraiture validates status, encapsulates an era, and brings credibility to a person or community within the world. During my 3 months on residency in Surianme’s rainforest village, Botopasi, I was immersed in the nature, the traditions, and the everyday. To see the river, was to feel the river. That is what connects us as humans. Even when not communicating in the same language we can revert back to our sight and emotions. In modern day, we are constantly consuming imagery digitally and reacting emotionally. This film reflects on how deeply our ancestors were connected to the land and as we grow further removed, the glitches are absorbed. This is a meditation on staying connected to nature. As part of the Saamaka Mii exhibition, ‘Ta Sei of Ta Fei’ was shown on the gallery’s 2nd floor, with projections sequenced in layers on mesh klamboe (mosquito net) screens. Visuals repeat and overlap as a glimpse into Botopasi daily life.
